Hijab is Not to Protect Men, But to Honour Women - pretty interesting article I read just now. Very relevant in an age where there are many discussions going on in Europe and around the world about the hijab being a sign of oppression... that's already skewing non-Muslim perception of Islam and women, but this article focusses more on how the MUSLIM perspective is being skewed. It's becoming more of a common misunderstanding in Islam that the hijab is a sign of a pious sister, and that if you are not wearing one, or not dressed in a way that is deemed Islamically appropriate, that you are tempting guys away from their deen.
And if have that perspective WITHIN Islam, what's sad is that reinforces other perspectives outside of the 'Muslim world'.
It's might seem like a very subtle difference, but the purpose of the hijab is about 'protection of women’s physical safety and presence from men, not the protection of men’s spiritual state from women.'
Men should stop blaming uncovered women for any deficiencies in their deen, and women should stop thinking that they need to cover to help the men stay on their deen.
I think only once we have that clear in our heads, as Muslims, will the rest of the world start to understand. Otherwise we end up re-enforcing skewed perspectives.
Just some food for thought :)
