The Transition Into The Hijabi World

Meet my little sister and my best friend. This is Hanan; some know her as ‘lil Hanan’ because we have 2 Hanan’s at our house!
She actually plays a major role in my outfit choices; she is my personal Gok. She understands what I am in to, what fits my shape and what I love.

A year ago whilst shopping with Hanan, she was starting university and needed a new wardrobe; the idea was for her to begin wearing a Hijab so needed new accommodating outfits. I remember her clearly picking up a jacket in TopShop and saying ‘I can’t wear this, I’m going to be wearing a Hijab’, I was actually really impressed with her thinking as she understood clearly that it’s not just about wearing a cloth on your head, your whole dress has to conform.

For Hanan’s personal reasons she decided not to wear the Hijab for her first year at university, something my family fully supported as this should be a personal decision for a girl not forced upon.

Some exciting news though, Hanan has recently joined the transition into the Hijabi world and has started to wear one since Ramadan 2011 (we are all extremely proud of her).
As a newbie, I am hoping I will encourage/help her to experiment with loads of styles and be just as proud as me in a scarf. She made me laugh as on her first outing wearing a Hijab, my blackberry was constantly flashing with messages such as ‘OMGGG I’m sooo excited! Does it look nice! Did I tie it ok! Agghhh PING!!! PING!!! PING!!!’
To clarify, yes to all her above questions!

The last couple of months have been really interesting as I have noticed my little sister become more focused on her outfits and more conscious of what she puts on. I think it’s really important that girls understand that with a Hijab comes responsibility! Recently I have also heard a lot of people talk about girls using a Hijab as a fashion piece, for those people who are quick to judge please be conscious of the words used as I feel that as long as the girl is correctly dressed/covered this statement can be false. It’s very important for everyone to be comfortable with themselves.
For those who are also considering the Hijabi transition, I will keep you updated on how lil Hanan is feeling and how she has found the change.

Love you more then you can ever imagine Hanooni xx
